Kinja'd!!!

I can’t help it, the cabin size and shape compared to everything else on the car is hilarious to me! A 2001 just came into my area Friday, no pricing, pictures, or mileage yet. I really really really want to go see it!! I’ve never seen a first gen before (err, noticed a first gen anyways). I’m so giddy about this car!

There’s no way! I can’t even imagine what type of demented mind would even WANT to do ANYTHING to a first gen Prius sedan!!

I’ll be in my bunk. *Googles furiously*

it’s got kind of the same goofy “bubble-top” profile like the Honda Amaze I drove a few years ago:

Where did Toyota go wrong.

Most discussion on PriusChat about these is battery replacements (including rebuilding with the improved Gen 2 or 3 battery modules) and MG2 stator replacements, not actual mods.

Of course, you might also see references to a Gen 0 Prius... which is what the English-language community usually calls the NHW10, the original Prius that launched in Japan only. The NHW11 is the (mild, cosmetically anyway) facelift that was exported and most of the world knows as the “original” Prius, and it had a more powerful engine, more powerful electric motors, a redesigned battery (using the same type of shared electrolyte cell modules that Toyota uses today, instead of sticks of NiMH D cells like the NHW10 and the early Honda hybrids used), updated infotainment (touchscreen instead of having a row of buttons below the screen), and in Japan and Europe a fold-down rear seat. Oh, and they removed the on-board NiMH charger (that ran off of the 12 volt system), that only NHW10s have (so you can actually jump start a NHW10 with a dead HV pack without towing to the dealer).

Now, as I understand, there actually is a bit of a Gen 0 following in Australia and New Zealand, where Gen 0s are the cheapest Priuses (due to having very little support in Japan, effectively zero manufacturer support outside of Japan, and batteries that are the exact same technology (I think even the exact same battery sticks) as Honda’s most failure-prone hybrids). There’s even one guy that turboed his: http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&title=The-Story-of-Turboing-a-Hybrid-Prius-Part-5&A=112198

My old boss had one. She replaced it with a used Chrysler Pacifica. She might have the worst taste in cars I’ve ever encountered.

It looks like a fake car from a Dreamworks movie.

Fun fact: the original Prius wasn’t originally intended to get a hybrid system at all. Their goal was to design a car to fit four adults comfortably, in as small and efficient a package as later, with no consideration of a hybrid system.

But, because it was meant to be the car of the 21st century, the executives decided to have the concept version have a hybrid system, and then once the team was convinced to do that, they set the internal fuel economy targets so high that a hybrid system had to be used in production. (The original plan was to use a direct injection engine with a CVT, alone, I believe.)

That concept, BTW:

And, it actually had a very similar hybrid system to what the Insight and first-gen Civic had... I wonder if Honda was inspired, because that was in 1995.

Also, note that the proportions are all there.

This might be why to me, it looks like an Echo with a hole on one side.

It’s a car that, when you actually look at it next to an Echo, looks nothing like an Echo... yet, outside of that context, totally looks like an Echo.

Of course, both were designed at the same time, with somewhat similar objectives, and with a shared engine (although the Prius is bigger, and is allegedly meant to take four 6'3" men (90th percentile American males) in comfort).

The hole is only on the left side, and it’s the intake vent for the battery. (They did that because they relocated the battery after finalizing the exterior styling...) Later Priuses moved to a cabin vent.

Actually, http://www.vfaq.net/docs/Prius_that_shook_world.pdf is an interesting read about the development of the NHW10 in general. The English is... really stilted, but it’s still readable.
